Retail Media Network
From Digital Out-of-Home to Retail Media Networks: A Shift in Scale and Strategy
For years, digital out-of-home (DOOH) advertising has transformed public spaces, bringing dynamic, programmatic content to billboards, transit hubs, airports, and urban environments. However, inside the retail space, a more targeted evolution has emerged:
the Retail Media Network (RMN).
While DOOH focuses on reach and visibility across large audiences, RMNs bring the same level of digital sophistication closer to the point of purchase, inside malls, storefronts, and even individual aisles. The result is a high-value media channel that merges advertising, data, shopper experience, and in-store technology into one cohesive system.
At Gable, we’ve spent over four decades working at the intersection of signage, architecture, AV, and marketing. As DOOH continues to evolve, RMNs represent the next generation of in-store digital advertising systems.
The Retail Media Network Partner Trusted by Leading Brands and Properties
A retail media network (RMN) is more than a digital billboard or a collection of in-store screens. It’s a sophisticated ecosystem that merges digital signage, advertising strategy, customer engagement, and scalable infrastructure. These networks allow retailers to monetize physical spaces while enhancing the shopper experience, turning every screen into a strategic touchpoint.
“A retail media network is the sum of all parts. It is only successful when the sum of all parts comes together and works as one engine. Oftentimes, a sign company is one part of the engine. An AV company is another part of the engine, but our team has spent the last 45 years becoming experts in not only the hardware, software, custom signage, and AV part of it, but also the subtle nuances of capturing customers’ attention.
At Gable, this philosophy is embedded into every RMN we help design, deploy, and maintain.”
Where Do Retail Media Networks Come to Life?
The most successful RMNs integrate into the customer experience. That’s why Gable pays close attention to architectural design, placement, ADA compliance, power/data logistics, and long-term maintenance. For example:
Simon Media Ventures, a subsidiary of Simon Properties, set out to create a retail media network that combined advertising with interactive maps. Gable became more than just a technology supplier, we became an extension of their strategic team.
Together, we collaborated on everything from form factors and motion sensors to kiosk placement and content strategy. Our teams studied mall traffic patterns, verified sight lines, and tailored each deployment to its environment. Thanks to custom ultrasonic sensors, displays could switch from ads to wayfinding when guests approached. Behind the scenes, a customized and automated ERP and a nationwide technician network ensured smooth operations.
Now recognized as a pioneer in RMN, Simon Media Ventures’ network spans 45+ malls, with over 650 interactive kiosks and 1,200+ endpoints. Gable’s innovation helped turn simple screens into a smart, adaptable digital platform.
Urban Edge’s Bergen Town Center project started with a simple goal: enhance the mall’s appeal to shoppers and tenants. Initially invited to integrate interactive kiosks, Gable saw a broader opportunity. Working alongside architectural firm Cooper Carry, we proposed a family of digital displays, including a 33-foot curved LED screen and elevators wrapped in immersive displays and content, to elevate the customer’s experience and boost ad revenue.
The result? Advertising revenue is expected to increase sixfold with a payback period under 18 months. This newly activated environment positioned the mall as both forward-thinking and visually distinctive.
Global brand PUMA wanted to standardize its in-store storytelling across outlets, malls, historic buildings, and flagship spaces. But no two stores were alike. Ceiling heights varied, window placements were inconsistent, and many locations couldn’t accommodate traditional screen mounts.
Gable developed and installed dual-sided, high-brightness displays and engineered custom telescoping screen mounts that adjusted to space constraints and preserved visual consistency. Flagship stores enabled experiential content, such as livestreams, VIP calls with F1 racers, and coast-to-coast fitness events. Over five years, we outfitted more than 120 stores while minimizing disruption and maximizing scalability.
These are not one-size-fits-all deployments. They are tailor-made solutions built with a deep understanding of site conditions, user behavior, and operational demands because no two retail media networks are identical.
Retail media networks serve a wide spectrum of users, from Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) managing dozens of malls to global brands refining in-store storytelling, and even retailers navigating digital transformation for the first time. But no matter where you are on your RMN journey, Gable’s role remains the same: helping you translate intent into infrastructure, objectives into outcomes, and assets into income.

Frequently Asked Questions About Retail Media Networks
A retail media network goes beyond digital signage by integrating content strategy, advertising management, analytics, and consumer engagement tools into a centralized, scalable platform. It’s not just about showing content—it’s about influencing purchasing behavior and generating ad revenue in physical spaces.
Retail media networks monetize high-traffic locations by selling advertising space to endemic and non-endemic brands. The dynamic content delivered through kiosks and digital displays can drive brand visibility and product sales, creating multiple revenue streams for property owners.
Content ranges from paid advertising and brand storytelling to interactive wayfinding, event promotions, and live or on-demand experiences. Some networks, like those Gable supports, even switch between content types using sensors or contextual triggers.
Not at all. While malls and national brands have been early adopters, RMNs are rapidly expanding into grocery, C-stores, pharmacies, sports venues, and even airports. Any physical space with recurring foot traffic is a candidate.
If you’re seeking to modernize outdated signage, increase tenant or brand visibility, or generate new revenue streams through in-store advertising, you’re ready. Gable helps assess feasibility and scale based on your goals and physical footprint.
Power and data access at each endpoint, secure CMS integration, and consistent maintenance protocols are baseline requirements. Gable handles all infrastructure planning—including site surveys, permitting, and ADA compliance—to ensure smooth deployment.
We align with property developers, brand marketers, and technology teams through shared project planning, content governance structures, and clearly defined success metrics. Our job is to bring everyone together toward a common goal.
Yes. Gable’s approach emphasizes modular hardware and flexible CMS tools for national consistency while accommodating local or regional content strategies.
Key performance indicators include ad revenue generated, customer dwell time, shopper engagement rates, and content playback metrics. For example, Urban Edge achieved a 6X increase in advertising revenue within two years of launch.
Gable provides proactive system monitoring, automated alerting, and access to a national technician network. Our service-level agreements (SLAs) ensure fast response times and minimal downtime.
